...What’s so exciting about Witches’ debut album is evident on several levels. First, Satalino’s vocals are raw, ragged, and scarred, but remain smooth and languidly emotional throughout the album. Even more impressive is her technical mastery of the guitar on Forever, which somehow manages to be both aggressive and leisurely, all while remaining true to the superior melodies. Satalino’s guitar metes out jagged, pointed notes that perfectly compliment the songs’ velvety hooks. It’s a guitar that never rests throughout the album, and while always at the forefront of the band’s sound, driving the tunes with the assistance of the less ornate, but incredibly effective rhythm section of Jared Gandy on bass, and Michael Clancy on drums, the six string here remains a thing to behold. As a thirty something with some serious attention deficit issues, I cannot fathom how Satalino manages to play such frenetic lead guitar and sing with such strength, but pictures online of the band playing live show only a three piece, amazingly enough.
